Important points of the day 

  • The Jeddah Amendment emphasises on the important role of “blue economy” in supporting sustainable economic growth employment ,food security , prosperity and stability .
  • The DCOC/JA is a grouping on maritime matters comprising 19 member states adjoining the Red Sea , Gulf of Aden , the East Coast of Africa and Island countries in the Indian Ocean Region. India has joined Japan , Norway, the UK and the US as Observers .
  • Every year World Ozone Day celebrated on 16 September. Ozone layer was discovered in 1913 by Charles Fabry and Henri Buisson . Ozone layer is most important for earth and for all living organisms because Ozone layer protect our earth from harmful radiation i.e. Ultraviolet radiation. The ozone layer is present on lower portion of stratosphere from approximately 15 to 35 kilometers . In 2020 , theme of Ozone layer in this year is 35 years of ozone layer protection . And slogan of Ozone layer is ‘Ozone for life’ . 

  • The Karnataka goverment is likely to pressurise the Centre for approval of the construction of the Mekedatu Project on the Cauvery river . The Project was first approved by the Karnataka state government in 2017. Mekedatu, meaning   goats  leap  is a deep gorge situated at the confluence of the rivers Cauvery and its tributary Arkavathi It received approval from the erstwhile Ministry of Water Resources for the detailed project report and is awaiting approval from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC).
