What is lakes ?

A lake is an area , filled with fresh or salt water of considerable size, localized in a basin , that is surrounded by land .

Where are lakes found ?

All over the world . Lakes are not evenly distributed on the earth’s surface; most are located in high latitude and mountains regions. Canada alone contains 50% of the world lakes.

How are lakes formed ?

Glacial erosion and depostion (Glaciers formed lake basins by gouging holes in loose soil or soft bedrock, depositing material across stream beds, or leaving buried chunks of ice that later melted to leave lake basins. When these natural depressions or impoundments filled with water, they became lakes. Example – Great lakes

Shifts in earth’s crust . Example – Lake Titicaca in south america.

Craters of some extinct volcano. Example – Taal Lake

Land slides. Example – Alabad lake

How many types of lakes ?

There are two types of lakes .Trophy= nutrient (phosphorus and nitrogen).

Eutrophic lakes Those that are shallow , saucer-like ones called eutrophic lakes .

Oligotrophic lakes They are usually , turbid water and deep, steep- sided ones called oligotrophic lakes wity clear water.

For the purpose of the conservation strategy natural lakes are defined as standing water bodies larget than 20 acre.

These lakes are generally found in mountanious areas, areas with ongoing glaciation .

  1. Chilika LakeLocated in Orissa, Chilika Lake is one the largest salty water lakes in Asia. This second largest lagoon of the world invites migratory birds from foreign lands.   2.  Loktak Lake Unique for its floating phumdis (vegetation), Lokatak Lake is the largest fresh water lake of North-East India. Located in Manipur, this lake is a great source of livelihood for a substantial number of fishermen.
  3. Dal Lake Dal Lake is one of the precious and most popular among all the tourist attractions of India. An itinerary to Kashmir – ‘Paradise on Earth’ cannot be done without witnessing the unparalleled loveliness of this water body.
  4. Vembanad Lake- Located at the heart of Kerala’s backwater, Vembanad Lake is a perfect spot to admire wonders of nature.
  5.  Pichola Lake- Located in Udaipur, Pichola Lake is a fresh water lake and is a major tourist spot of the city.
  6. Bhimtal Lake- Being the largest lake in Kumaon region, Bhimtal Lake is situated around 22 Km from Nainital.
  7. Pangong Tso Lake- Situated at an altitude of 4,250 meters, Pangong Tso Lake falls in the land of Ladakh.
  8. Suraj Tal Lake- Located in the Lahaul and Spiti valley of Himachal Pradesh, Suraj Tal Lake is also known as the Lake of the Sun God.
  9. Nainital Lake- Nainital Lake is a pear-shaped pool of fresh water situated right at the centre of the Nainital town.
  10. Tam Dil Lake- Located in Mizoram Tamdil Lake is one of the popular picnic spot and tourist attraction. Located 85 km from Aizwal.
  11. Wular Lake – Originally a lake basin, Wular Lake is another rare beauty of Kashmir. Located at a distance of 60 Km from Srinagar, this is one of the largest fresh water lakes of Asia. Surrounded by blue mountains, the place is replete with rich bio-diversity. Supported by Jhelum River, the water body gives flood protection to Kashmir valley.
  12. Nigeen Lake- Although Nigeen Lake is a part of Dal Lake, many times it is spoken of as a separate lake. Renowned as the ‘Jewel in the Ring’, the lake got its name for the lining of the trees encircling the blue pool or water.
  13.  Sela Lake- To be found on high altitude, Sela Lake falls in the Twang district of Arunachal Pradesh.
  14. Chandratal Lake – The crescent shaped water reservoir is sandwiched between quiet Himalayan peaks. Placed at a height of 4300 meters, the lake comes under Spiti and Lahaul district of Himachal Pradesh.
  15. Nakki Lake- Located in Mount Abu of Rajasthan, Nakki lake is attributed with many unique facts and features. It is the largest man-made lake in India.
