What is World Osteoporosis Day ?

World Osteoporosis Day (WOD) is held worldwide on October 20. This day is celebrated around the world to raise awareness of the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis and metabolic bone diseases. WOD is organized by the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) and is launching a year-long campaign on a specific topic. WOD strives to reach out to healthcare professionals, the media, policymakers, patients and the general public, making osteoporosis and fracture prevention a global health priority.

The theme for the 2020 WOD global campaign is “That’s OSTEOPOROSIS”, highlighting the visuals and emotionally powerful stories of people with osteoporosis in all regions of the world.

What is osteoporosis?

 Osteoporosis means to porous bones. It is a bone disease that decreases bone density and quality. It makes bones weak and brittle, making it easier to break down even with a slight fall, swelling, sneezing, or sudden movement .Fractures caused by osteoporosis can be life threatening and can be a major cause of pain and long-term damage. Osteoporosis is a growing global problem around the world. It affects one in three women and one in five men over the age of 50. It is affects families – family members often bear the burden of care .World Osteoporosis Day teaches people the importance of health, personal hygiene and protecting bones and muscles from dangerous and life-threatening fractures.

Prevention of osteoporosis

Prevention of osteoporosis begins in childhood, when a healthy bone-building diet and adequate exercise help children achieve their maximum “maximum bone mass”. This is important because the more bones you have . In Osteoporosis you prevent by  get enough calcium , vitamin D & C , green vegetables, dairy products , omega-3 fatty acid and eat a balanced diet. Exercise regularly. Eat foods that are good for bone health, such as fruits and vegetables.
